You worry about your ADHD kid all the time!
You worry about what he eats and how much he eats.
You worry about whether or not she is making friends.
You worry about the medications or therapy.
You worry about school and whether or not they are going to pass.
You worry…
And worry…
And worry…
Today, we are going to go straight to THE SOURCE of peace to help you worry LESS about your ADHD kid!
That may seem like an impossibility.
As moms, we always find something to worry about.
But let me ask you this:
Has all that worry helped your child at all?
Has it improved their diet? Relationships? Success at school?
Or
Has it given you headaches? Made you irritable? Made it more difficult for you to cope with the stress that ADHD brings to your family?
I’m gonna guess it’s the latter.
So, what are you supposed to do instead?
As women of faith, we need to lean into our true source of peace for everything.
We need to go to God’s word.
We will use a very familiar verse and see exactly how it helps us to WORRY LESS about our ADHD Kids!
Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Let’s unpack that a little bit.
Step #1: Do not be anxious about anything.
Are you anxious?
Anxious means you are experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
If there is anything uncertain in a family with ADHD it is how things will go from day to day.
Okay, so you’re anxious.
You don’t know how things will go for your kid from day to day.
It’s uncertain.
It’s not something you can completely control.
I don’t know about you, but I hate feeling out of control. It literally makes me sick.
Like...sick - sick.
I’ve been known to throw up because I was too anxious about the unknown in a given situation.
Maybe you don’t have that much of an issue, but we all can get worked up to a point where we are unhealthy.
Being anxious is not healthy and it is NOT what God wants for you.
Let’s unpack it a little more
Step #2:
….but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God.
In somethings?
In things you can control?
Nope.
In EVERYTHING, people.
God wants you to bring EVERYTHING to Him.
Bring God the entire grocery list of things you worry about with your ADHD kid.
Bring it:
the half eaten peanut butter sandwich,
the playdates that always seem to fall through,
the classroom noises that set her off,
the bus rides where he always seems to get in trouble, the recess hour, the messy room, the temper tantrums, the lost assignments, the bad attitudes…
Bring it all to God.
Sometimes we don’t want to bring things to God because we think it’s too small or too unimportant or too selfish.
Or sometimes, we’re just embarrassed.
God already knows what is on your mind.
He hears your innermost thoughts.
He created your mind and know EXACTLY how you operate…
It’s not like you’re hiding anything from Him.
Tell God all the ways you worry about your ADHD child.
Bring them all to His feet.
Digging deeper…
….but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God.
To worry less about your ADHD kid you need to pray, petition and be thankful.
Let’s start with prayer.
That’s simple right?
“Dear God, please help my ADHD kid with ………..(insert grocery list of needs)...Amen.”
I would argue that it’s more than that.
Prayer isn’t supposed to be like going through the drive through at McDonalds.
Prayer is a conversation...an ongoing conversation.
It assumes a connection, a relationship.
Do you have a relationship with God?
Do you spend time with Him outside of asking for help?
Do you get to know Him by reading the Bible daily?
If you find you are not sure where you stand in this area, I suggest reading: Start Here: Beginning a Relationship with Jesus.
To worry less about your ADHD kid, you need to pray and talk intimately with the one who created him or her.
Next piece: petition.
What is that?
A petition is a request made for something desired, especially a respectful or humble request, as to a superior or to one of those in authority.
When you ask God for something, you need to remember who you are in relation to Him.
Romans 9:20 says:
But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, "Why have you made me like this?"
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask God for things.
Like I said earlier, He already knows what is on your mind.
You can’t hide it from Him.
Just don’t come at it with an attitude of entitlement.
Your ADHD child belongs to God.
God created him / her.
Show some respect and humility in your request.
Third piece in this section: with thanksgiving.
Every good attitude begins with gratitude.
That might be a little cheesy, but it’s still true.
Being thankful for what you have goes a long way to changing your attitude about what you don’t have.
Give God thanks for his blessings.
Thank Him for everything you can think of about your ADHD child.
Life
Health
Salvation
Smile
Laughter
Hugs
Creativity
ALL THE THINGS….that you overlook when you focus only on what is missing or wrong.
I’m willing to be that if you’ll do JUST THAT ONE PART...you will worry less.
How will it help you worry less about your ADHD kid if you do these things?
What does God offer you if you do these things?
Don’t be ANXIOUS,
Bring EVERYTHING,
Pray, Petition, Give THANKS.
Look at the end of the verse:
Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
He will give you peace.
Didn’t say He’d fix it.
Didn’t say He’d take it away.
He said He’d give you PEACE.
Peace is freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility.
Do you need peace?
I do.
Pray with me,
“Dear God,
Help us to release our worry over all the many things that concern us about our ADHD kids. Remind us that YOU are the one who created them and YOU already know what they need.
Help us to come to you and rest in YOUR arms as we share our feelings and concerns. Teach us to trust that you will hear and comfort our hearts.
Thank you God for all the many wonderful things that our ADHD kids have brought into our lives. Please bring them to our minds often when we start to worry. You are amazing, God. There is nothing that is beyond your knowledge or control. Teach us to trust your kids to you.
In Jesus Name,
Amen.”
